Biomedical, Clinical and Philosophical Aspects of the Placebo Effect

Many issues related to placebos and placebo effects puzzle physicians, patients, and the scientific community. Are placebo effects clinically relevant? How can they be understood in neurophysiological and neurophilosophical perspectives? What is their place in modern medicine? The aim of the symposium is to bring together a multidisciplinary group of researchers to set the current knowledge in a broader context and to discuss the implications for the goal of good health care.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS Junior scientists up to the postdoctoral level are invited to submit an abstract that introduces their own work in the placebo field.

From June 26th till June 29th 2012 Erasmus MC Rotterdam will host the 11th conference of the International Association of Bioethics: THINKING AHEAD, Bioethics and the Future, and the Future of Bioethics.

This conference will discuss key issues relevant for the future, including future technologies in health care, ethics and research in developing countries, synthetic biology, enhancement, life-prolonging strategies, environmental issues, the moral responsibility for future generations, food and ethics, and public health. Thinking ahead of course requires looking back, what have we learned in the past, which lessons have we not learned, what can contemporary bioethics show us for tomorrow.

The IAB conferences are an interdisciplinary forum for the exchange of moral views, practices, and insights in methodologies, where established and young bio-ethicists meet. 20 years after the IAB founding conference in Amsterdam, the IAB World Conference of Bioethics returns to the Netherlands.

Moral Understandings of the ‘Wish to Die’ and Ethical Implications

Based on the results of a qualitative interview study that was conducted with 31 participating palliative care patients 2008-2011 in different palliative care situations in Switzerland, the conference explores terminally ill oncology patients’ and their caregivers’ perspectives on the phenomenon of a ‘wish to die’. Key ethical issues and consequences for palliative care practice shall be identified and discussed using different normative, narrative, hermeneutic, relational and phenomenological approaches to biomedical ethics.

Die Stelle beinhaltet u.a. die Durchführung einer Literaturrecherche zu Methoden der Erfassung von Urteilsfähigkeit, die Analyse von bestehenden Assessment-Tools sowie die Mitarbeit bei der Planung, Durchführung, Datensammlung, Auswertung und Publikation einer gesamtschweizerischen empirischen Studie. Zudem helfen Sie mit bei der ethischen Einordnung der Studienresultate, beim Verfassen von Empfehlungen für Ärzte und an der Erarbeitung eines Training-Moduls zur Untersuchung von Urteilsfähigkeit. Allenfalls arbeiten Sie am Gesuch für eine Folgestudie mit.

Weltweit – so auch in der Schweiz – warten sehr viele Patientinnen und Patienten auf ein lebensrettendes Organ. Umso wichtiger ist es, dass mit den wenigen vorhandenen Organen gerecht umgegangen wird.

Aber wer darf auf die Transplantationsliste? Die Patienten, bei denen eine Transplantation medizinisch am dringlichsten ist? Oder diejenigen, bei denen eine Transplantation den grössten medizinischen Nutzen verspricht? Und was heisst es dabei, nicht gegen Patienten zu diskriminieren?

Bei psychiatrischen Patientinnen und Patienten können sich diese Fragen mit besonderer Schärfe stellen. Zum Beispiel dann, wenn ein Patient aufgrund eines wiederholten Suizidversuchs besonders dringlich eine Leber braucht, aber unklar ist, wie der langfristige Transplantationserfolg sein wird. Welchen medizinischen Nutzen hat in dieser Situation die Transplantation für den Patienten? Und ist es diskriminierend, aufgrund eines psychiatrisch oder psycho-sozial bedingten geringeren Nutzens von einer Listung des Patienten abzusehen?

Mit dem Symposium «Organtransplantation – Wer darf auf die Liste? Psychiatrische und ethische Aspekte» möchten wir Ihnen die Möglichkeit geben, an der Diskussion um diese Fragen teilzunehmen.
